Johann Gottfried Schadow

Johann Gottfried Schadow was a leading figure in Berlin’s neoclassical sculpture. His stay in Rome from 1785 to 1787 combined the study of antiquity with training under Alexander Trippel. He later became a teacher himself, supporting the education of his son Ridolfo. His group of Princesses Luise and Friederike first appeared in plaster in 1795, followed by the marble version in 1797.

Schadow also designed the Quadriga installed on the Brandenburg Gate in 1793. Other craftsmen produced the full-scale models and hammered copper elements. His compositions circulated in smaller forms as well: Carl Friedrich Hagemann adapted the princesses’ group for KPM, translating the sculptural model into biscuit porcelain. The example preserved in Berlin’s Kunstgewerbemuseum was manufactured after 1800.

This profile brings together identity references for Johann Gottfried Schadow and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
