Jacoba Maria van Nickelen came from a family of painters in Haarlem. The daughter of Jan van Nickelen and a pupil of Herman van der Mijn, she specialised in flowers and fruit. In her teacher’s Düsseldorf studio she met Willem Troost, whom she married in 1714. The couple subsequently worked in several German towns, and she also appears in collection catalogues under the name Troost.
Two drawings catalogued under her name at the Städel demonstrate her still life practice. Butterfly and Fly beside a Peach uses bodycolour on laid paper, enclosed by a black border drawn with a brush. Butterfly and Wasp beside Grapes employs a similar format and the same technique. Fruit and insects become the subjects of small compositions on paper.
