Hans Makart

Born : 1840Died : 1884

Called to Vienna in 1869, Hans Makart combined history painting, portraiture and monumental decoration. Bacchus and Ariadne, painted in 1873–1874 and preserved at the Belvedere, unfolds its mythological subject across a canvas almost eight metres wide. On a very different scale, Portrait of a Young Lady in Profile, around 1874, in the Liechtenstein Collections, is painted in oil on wood; the sitter’s identity remains unknown.

His activities extended beyond individual pictures: in 1879 he designed the pageant celebrating the imperial couple’s silver wedding anniversary. The Victory of Light over Darkness, from 1883–1884, also records his interest in large decorative schemes. This oil painting on canvas prepares a ceiling intended for the staircase of the Kunsthistorisches Museum, but the project was never executed.

This profile brings together identity references for Hans Makart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
