Rudolf von Voigtländer is documented as a painter of landscapes, interiors and nudes: these genres define the main fields of his practice, without requiring it to be reduced to a single motif. Born in 1854, he began his studies in Dresden in 1874 and then continued his training in Antwerp. He also received artistic instruction in Karlsruhe from Karl Gussow.
His professional career took him to Karlsruhe, Brussels and Berlin. In 1894, he stayed on the island of Rügen, notably on Vilm according to one of the biographical entries. After Brussels, he returned to settle in Berlin; a sale entry reports that he took part in numerous exhibitions. The same biographical entry notes that he performed military service in 1914.
The works associated with him attest to a variety of subjects. A portrait of Bernhard Plockhorst, painted in oil on canvas and dated 1895, is attributed to him in the image record; this indicates that the work belongs to the Braunschweiger Landesmuseum. Another entry describes “Mädchen mit Puppe (Zur Winterzeit)”, an oil painting on mahogany signed at the lower right, whose reverse bears a label from the Great Art Exhibition of Berlin of 1893. Other works described include a view of a façade in Venice, an oil painting on wood signed at the lower left, and “Am Kamin”, an unsigned oil painting on canvas dated 1901. A label also links “Am Kamin” to the International Art Exhibition in Dresden of 1901. Finally, a sale entry reports that a work with a title inspired by Oscar Wilde was exhibited in Berlin in 1906 and mentions a label from the Great Art Exhibition of Berlin.
