Генрих Цилле

Born : 1858Died : 1929Documented citizenships : Germany

Heinrich Zille (1858–1929), born in Radeburg and deceased in Berlin, was a German draughtsman, lithographer and photographer. His family moved to Berlin in 1867. He trained in lithography while attending evening classes with Theodor Hosemann. Employed by the Photographische Gesellschaft from 1877, he became an independent artist after his dismissal in 1907. He joined the Berlin Secession in 1903.

His drawings observe working-class neighbourhoods, street children and the living conditions of Berlin's proletariat. Humour, empathy and social criticism combine in scenes published in magazines including Simplicissimus and in the volumes Kinder der Straße and Mein Milljöh. In 1924 he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts. His photographic work, long less familiar, complements this attentive engagement with urban life and the people around him.

This profile brings together identity references for Генрих Цилле and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
