Roberto Crippa

Roberto Crippa (1921–1972), an Italian painter and sculptor, studied at the Accademia di Brera in Milan until 1940; he is described there as a fellow student of Aldo Carpi, Achille Funi and Carlo Carrà. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Bergamini in Milan in 1947. From the following year, he regularly took part in group exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale. In 1948, he was among the founding members of the “Spacialistes”, a group formed around Lucio Fontana and committed to exploring new ways of representing space through modern technical means.
Between 1948 and 1952, he created the “Spirals”, vividly coloured compositions that developed his research through a vocabulary of swirling forms. He subsequently worked on pieces he called “Collages”, in which cut-out forms animate the surface and are distinguished by their pronounced materiality. From 1956, his practice extended to sculpture: he constructed cut and welded metal volumes, evoking, in particular, insects and monsters. Alongside painting and sculpture, he produced prints, lithographs and illustrated books.
A keen aerobatic pilot, Crippa took part in international competitions in the discipline. His work was also recognised with several art prizes, including the Viterbo Prize in 1958. He died in 1972 in Bresso in a plane crash during a training flight at the airport, together with his student Piero Crespi.
