Pieter van Schaeyenborgh (1600–1657) was a Flemish painter specialising in still life. A pair of paintings depicting freshwater and sea fish provides an unusually well-documented example of his activity. Commissioned by Johan van Nordingen, these oils on canvas were delivered in 1656 and 1657, according to surviving payment records.
The works decorated the Provenhuis van Nordingen in Alkmaar for more than two centuries; an inventory of 1685 places them in the regents’ room. Lent to the Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar from 1875 to 1905, they were later separated and subsequently reunited. Their inclusion in “Fish – Still Lifes by Dutch and Flemish Masters 1550–1700”, held in Utrecht in 2004, situated them within the history of this particular specialism in painting.
