David Hare

Born : 1917Died : 1992Documented citizenships : United States

The American painter and sculptor David Hare, born in New York in 1917, was active in New York’s Surrealist circles before becoming associated with action painting from 1943. In 1947, he took part as a sculptor in the Exposition internationale du surréalisme in Paris.

His meeting with André Breton in 1941 marks an important chapter in his career: Hare became co-editor of the journal VVV, conceived by Breton with the help of Marcel Duchamp. Jacqueline Lamba served as interpreter between the two men, as Breton still knew very little English.

In his early works, Hare used automatism by moving a heat source across a sensitive surface. His 1944 journey to the Native American reservations of Arizona brought him closer to Native Americans; after this stay, he built his own totems.

This profile brings together identity references for David Hare and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
