The French painter, printmaker, illustrator, art theorist and teacher André Lhote (1885–1962) pursued artistic creation alongside reflection on art and its teaching. His position on Cubism was accompanied by reservations about what he considered too abstract: he sought to preserve a connection with classical painting, both through subject matter and through compositional rigour. Works listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include Port of Bordeaux, dated 1914, and The Ladies of Avignon, dated around 1923.
Born in Bordeaux, he attended decorative arts classes at the city’s École des Beaux-Arts from the age of thirteen and joined a decorative sculpture studio. Financially supported by Gabriel Frizeau, he went to Paris in 1907 and presented three canvases there at the Salon d’Automne. In 1919, he began writing an art criticism column for La Nouvelle Revue française.
Teaching became a lasting part of his career: after teaching at various academies from 1918, he founded his own academy in 1922, at 18, rue d’Odessa, in Montparnasse, where he taught until the end of his life. He organised summer courses for his students at his house in Mirmande, in the Drôme. He also set out his ideas in works such as the Traité du paysage, published by Floury in 1939, and the Traité de la figure, published by the same publisher in 1950. In 1957, he created murals for the faculty of medicine in Bordeaux.
