The French painter, lithographer and teacher Eugène Anatole Carrière (1849–1906) developed, from the 1880s onwards, a distinctive style characterised by a brownish tonal range and an almost complete abandonment of polychromy. Scenes of family life and portraits occupy an important place in his work; he himself described his attraction to “the mystery of reality and the reality of the invisible”.
Having grown up in Strasbourg, he trained there as a lithographer before continuing his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in Alexandre Cabanel’s studio. After 1870, his beginnings as a commercial lithographer were difficult. Works cited include L’Enfant malade (1885), as well as the portraits of Verlaine (1891) and Edmond de Goncourt (1892). An earlier work, Priam aux pieds d’Achille pour qu’il lui remette le corps d’Hector (1876), is held at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau.
His first solo exhibition was held in 1891 at Boussod et Valadon. He took part in the 1889 and 1900 Expositions universelles, as well as in the founding of the Société nationale des beaux-arts in 1890. In 1898, he founded the Académie Carrière on rue de Rennes, where he taught. Henri Matisse, André Derain, Jean Puy, Francis Jourdain and Valentine Val were among his students. The Musée d’Orsay holds a Portrait de Paul Verlaine, while the Musée des Avelines in Saint-Cloud has a collection of works assembled through the Oulmont donation. Appointed a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1889 and then an officer in 1900, Carrière also took part in the defence of Dreyfus alongside Clemenceau and Zola.
