Jonathan Meese

Documented citizenships : Germany

Jonathan Meese studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1995 to 1998; according to Kunstplaza, his studies at the institution ended without a degree. This period included his first solo exhibition, which Kunstplaza dates to 1997 at the Kehdingen Art Association. He lives and works in Berlin and Ahrensburg, Germany.

In 1998, “Die Räuber” was presented at Contemporary Fine Arts in Berlin; in 2006, “Dr Saint-Just de Fort Knox” was shown at the Daniel Templon gallery in Paris. The same gallery hosted “St Neutralité” from 8 January to 19 February 2011. In 2017, the Carré Sainte-Anne in Montpellier presented “Dr Merlin de Large (Marquis Zed de Baby-Excalibur)”, followed by “Die Irrfahrten des Jonathan Meese” at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich in 2018. More recently, Galerie Templon presented “DOCTOR-DOC-DR.-„HIGH NOON“ IS BACK! (WONDERLAND DE LARGE)” at Paris-Beaubourg from 2 September to 28 October 2023.

A Lempertz lot description documents “Der Weltraumgott 7,5”, an oil on canvas from 2004 measuring 40 × 30 cm; the canvas is signed, dated and titled on the reverse. Kunstplaza reports that works by Meese have been acquired by the Museum Abteiberg, the Städel Museum, the Bonn Collection of Contemporary Art and the Centre Pompidou. The same source names the Falckenberg Collection, the Saatchi Gallery and the Essl Collection among the private collections holding his works.
