Born in Augsburg, Georg Philipp Rugendas made military life a subject of observation and painting. A biographical notice reports that he particularly shaped his style by studying the various phases of this activity from life. According to the same notice, the Brunswick Gallery held nine battle scenes painted in oil.
He was first a pupil of the history painter Isaak Fisches. He then continued his studies in Vienna for two years, before working in Venice in 1692 under the direction of Antonio Molinari and subsequently leaving for Rome.
The Art Institute of Chicago lists a work by Rugendas entitled *Review of Troops*, with no date given. The title connects with the artist’s documented interest in military scenes, but on its own provides no information about the composition of the work.
The distinction between attribution and belonging to a school is apparent in the art market: a *Reiterschlacht*, a small oil painting on wood measuring 12 × 16.5 cm, was presented by the Dobiaschofsky auction house as a work from the school of Georg Philipp I Rugendas.
This profile brings together identity references for Georg Philipp Rugendas the Elder and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
