Oskar Schlemmer

The German painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer Oskar Schlemmer (1888–1943), who was born in Stuttgart and died in Baden-Baden, developed an artistic practice in which the body and space are conceived as organised forms. In his formal explorations, he reduced the body to simple elements—circle, sphere, cylinder, cone—and to geometric lines whose placement follows rules of composition. His stage work gives central importance to space and arranges bodies according to their formal interplay; the Triadic Ballet is presented as his major work.

His work also extended to mural painting: between 1928 and 1930, he created nine murals for a room at the Folkwang Museum in Essen. The Bauhaus Stairway (Bauhaustreppe), dated 1932, is held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York; one work is also recorded in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Exhibitions devoted to Schlemmer include Oskar Schlemmer und die abstrakte Bühne, presented at the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Zurich in 1961, and an exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1986. For Weibliche Figur, recorded presentations include Stuttgart in 1953, followed by Baltimore, New York, San Francisco and Minneapolis in 1986–1987.

This profile brings together identity references for Oskar Schlemmer and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
