Horst Janssen

Horst Janssen (1929–1995) developed a graphic oeuvre comprising drawings, etchings, woodcuts, lithographs and end-grain woodcuts. A stay in Svanshall, in southern Sweden, resulted in numerous drawings of coastlines; his return to etching then accompanied his focus on landscape.
From 1946, he studied under Alfred Mahlau at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg. A drawing published in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit in 1947 marked his first publication. He received a Lichtwark scholarship in Hamburg in 1952. The City of Darmstadt Art Prize was awarded to him in 1964; in 1968, he received the Grand Prize for Graphic Art at the Venice Biennale.
In 1965, the kestnergesellschaft in Hanover presented the first retrospective of his drawings and graphic works, which subsequently travelled to other German cities and Basel. His work was also shown at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980, followed by the Albertina in Vienna in 1982. Works by Janssen listed by the Art Institute of Chicago include Skeleton (1985–1986) and Therapeutic Mask, from Paranoia Series (1982).
His work is represented in the Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst der Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Bonn. In 1992, Oldenburg made him an honorary citizen. A museum dedicated to the artist opened in Oldenburg in 2000. In 2004, the Leopold Museum in Vienna presented Egon Schiele / Horst Janssen, an exhibition that considered his work in relation to that of Egon Schiele.
