Wilhelm Theodor Nocken (1830–1905), a German artist born and deceased in Düsseldorf, trained in the city before working there as a landscape painter.
While still an apprentice house painter, he attended Joseph Keller’s Sunday freehand drawing course in 1840, followed in 1843 by Rudolf Wiegmann’s construction course at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. He attended the elementary class from 1844, then Johann Wilhelm Schirmer’s landscape class from 1847 to 1850. He completed his studies in the third quarter of the 1850 academic year to join the military. Nocken settled in Düsseldorf as a landscape painter. His preferred subjects were the alpine landscapes of Bavaria and Austria, rendered in a romanticising and idyllic style. More rarely, he painted motifs from the Rhineland and Westphalia.
