Born in Budapest in 1893, Pál (Pal) Fried (1893–1976) is identified as a Hungarian and later American artist. His training began at the Hungarian Academy of Arts, where he studied under Hugo Pohl, and continued in Paris at the Académie Julian. This training between Budapest and Paris preceded a primarily figurative body of work, whose recurring subjects are dancers, nudes and portraits.
These themes are joined by views of Paris, seascapes, cowboys and landscapes of the American West, as well as Orientalist subjects. The diversity of this repertoire is also reflected in the portraits of American figures he painted, including one of Marilyn Monroe. His paintings are generally executed in oil; he also works in pastel and is interested in light and movement.
He sometimes reworks the same painting in several almost identical versions, making slight changes to facial expressions or colour ranges. This practice gives certain compositions subtle variations rather than transforming the subject. On his paintings, he adopts the Hungarian form of his signature, “Fried Pál”, placing the family name first.
This profile brings together identity references for Pál Fried and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
4 references are documented at Germann, Dobiaschofsky, Piguet. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
