Christian Mali’s career connects wood engraving with landscape painting and scenes populated by animals. After several years in Stuttgart as a wood engraver, he joined his brother Jan in Munich, where he became a professor and met Anton Braith around 1860; Braith became his friend. A trip to Italy preceded his beginnings in landscape painting, and he most often painted landscapes at sunrise or sunset. In 1865, he went to Paris. After studying Troyon’s works there, he introduced animals into his paintings, particularly sheep: landscape and the presence of animals are thus two documented aspects of his work. Le soir à Vérone is cited as an example of his landscapes.
An auction catalogue describes Heufuhrwerk mit Bauernpaar und Kühen an der Tränke as a signed oil on canvas, dated 1879 and bearing the inscription “München”. The stated dimensions are 52 × 98 cm; the lot was sold for CHF 2,500, against an estimate of CHF 3,800. Mali was buried in Biberach alongside Anton Braith and bequeathed his works to the city.
