Petrus Joseph Lutgers was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and lithographer whose career unfolded during the nineteenth century. Born in Amsterdam and active notably in Loenen aan de Vecht, he combined making images with teaching drawing. His views of houses, gardens and rivers give particular attention to the relationship between architecture and landscape. Between 1832 and 1836, he worked on a series of views along the Vecht, documented by the Rijksmuseum, comprising eighty-six prints. Lithography thus gave a serial form to his observation of places. His repertoire also includes portraits, among them a self-portrait in the Centraal Museum. These activities connect the depiction of a region, printed circulation and study of the figure.
This profile brings together identity references for Petrus Josephus Lutgers and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
