Anna-Eva Bergman

Documented citizenships : France · Norway

Anna-Eva Bergman (1909–1987) was a Norwegian artist who trained in Oslo, Vienna and Paris. Initially an illustrator and draughtswoman, she developed a painting practice after the Second World War based on the simplification of natural forms. Rocks, mountains, celestial bodies and boats became elements of a personal vocabulary. Metal leaf applied to the surface gives light an active role: changing illumination and viewpoints alter the apparent weight and presence of these shapes.

Journeys through Norway and experiences of Mediterranean landscapes informed this investigation over the course of her career. The horizon gradually became a major subject in her paintings and prints. After settling in Antibes in 1973, Bergman further reduced her colours and compositions. These spare motifs bring observed landscape into contact with rhythm and a sense of infinity, while retaining a strong material presence.
