Pietro Longhi

Died : 1785

Pietro Longhi, born Pietro Falca, observed eighteenth-century Venetian society through small paintings. Trained by Antonio Balestra, he moved from history painting to scenes of everyday life. The National Gallery’s Exhibition of a Rhinoceros at Venice, probably painted in 1751, shows Clara before an audience that includes several masked spectators. Carnival entertainment thus becomes a subject for painting.

In The Tickle at the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, around 1755, a young woman brushes a feather against a sleeping man’s face while two maids look on. Drawings in the Museo Correr prepare individual gestures within the composition. Elegant interiors, visits and leisure activities form a repertoire valued by Venetian families, in which clothing and bodily attitudes make the customs of social life visible.

This profile brings together identity references for Pietro Longhi and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
