Horst Antes
Born : 1936Documented citizenships : Germany
Born in Heppenheim in 1936, Horst Antes develops a figurative language centred on a schematic figure that has become a recurring motif in his work. From 1957 to 1959, he studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under the wood engraver HAP Grieshaber.
After receiving the City of Hanover Prize in 1959 and a grant from the city the following year, he receives the Junger Westen Prize in Germany and first prize at the Biennale des Jeunes in France in 1961. In 1965, he becomes a professor in Karlsruhe; he leaves his post in 1971 and resumes it in 1984. His exhibition history includes documenta 3 and 4, in Kassel, in 1964 and 1968. He also takes part in the 1966 Venice Biennale as part of the German Pavilion; the Kornfeld auction catalogue states that he receives the Unesco Prize there.
The documented works show the diversity of the supports used: an untitled drawing from 1963 combines gouache, coloured chalk and pencil, while Ovales Stillleben mit Rohr und Kopf, dated 1965, is a gouache on paper. The bibliography includes, in particular, the fifth volume of the catalogue raisonné of paintings, devoted to the period 1976–1983, published in 2012 under the direction of Stephanie Fiedel and Katja Szymczak.
This profile brings together identity references for Horst Antes and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
30 references are documented at Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer, Dobiaschofsky, Kornfeld, Schuler, Germann, Lempertz. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
