Pieter Nason worked in the seventeenth century for merchant and aristocratic patrons, including clients in Dutch circles and Berlin. Portrait of a Man of 1663, at Dulwich Picture Gallery, combines a lace collar and cuffs with velvet drapery and a marble column. A skull accompanies this presentation of wealth as a reminder of life’s brevity.
Its companion, Portrait of a Woman at the Walters Art Museum, includes an open pocket watch, extending the meditation on time proposed by the male portrait. In another Portrait of a Man, at Salzburg’s Residenzgalerie, Nason introduces a landscape vista behind the sitter leaning on a console. This arrangement adopts the conventions of prestigious society portraiture, which were increasingly taken up by the bourgeoisie of the northern Netherlands.
This profile brings together identity references for Pieter Nason and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
