Reidar Särestöniemi (1925–1981), who was born in Kittilä, developed his work in close relationship with Lapland. After studying in Helsinki and at the Repin Institute in Leningrad, he returned to work at the family farm in Särestö. Landscapes, seasons and animals became vehicles for intensely coloured paintings in which personal experience encounters inherited beliefs and the forms of the surrounding natural world.
A lynx, reindeer or ram can acquire an autobiographical dimension within these images. During the 1970s, his attachment to the landscape accompanied a defence of nature, notably against projects threatening the Ounasjoki River. The Didrichsen Art Museum, whose founders formed a lasting friendship with the artist, organised four exhibitions of his work during that decade. His Särestö estate opened as a museum in 1985.
