Franz Marc
A journey to France, particularly to Paris, in 1903 fostered his interest in Impressionism; according to one source, he also discovered Japanese art there. His first solo exhibition took place in 1910 at the Kunsthandlung Brackl in Munich.
Marc co-edits the almanac of Der Blaue Reiter with Vassily Kandinsky; each contributes three essays. From 1912 onwards, he takes an interest in Cubism, Futurism and Orphism, and introduces abstract elements into his compositions. This development towards an abstract vocabulary becomes more pronounced at the end of 1913. Le Destin des animaux, dated 1913, is held at the Kunstmuseum Basel.
A pencil drawing on Pergamin paper, Esel in stilisierter Landschaft (1912), measures 11.5 × 15.5 cm and comes from Skizzenbuch XXV, according to the catalogue entry documenting it. At the beginning of the First World War, Marc voluntarily enlists in the German army; he dies at Braquis, in the Meuse, on 4 March 1916.
