SwissArtGallery · Documented identity
Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was a figure of Viennese Modernism. In 1906 he entered Christian Griepenkerl’s class at the Vienna Academy, later participating in the formation of the Neukunstgruppe in 1909. His drawing of Friederike Beer in a striped dress with raised arms provides a documented example of his portraiture. Made in 1914 in pencil and watercolour on Simili-Japan paper, this study prepares an oil painting from the same year. According to the Galerie Kornfeld catalogue entry, Friederike Beer commissioned the portrait herself. Coloured areas sit alongside portions of paper left blank. The sheet is listed in Jane Kallir’s complete catalogue published in 1998 and was exhibited at Vienna’s Albertina in 2005–2006, among other venues.
This profile brings together identity references for Egon Schiele and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
