The shift from history subjects to scenes of musicians marks an important change in Hendrick ter Brugghen’s painting. At the beginning of his career, he painted exclusively history subjects; in 1621, he turned to genre painting with The Flute and Fife Players, before creating numerous scenes of musicians. Trained by Abraham Bloemaert, he travelled to Italy after completing his apprenticeship and stayed in Milan during the summer of 1614. Evidence suggests that he may have made a second journey to Rome between the summer of 1619 and the summer of 1621. Regarding his early works, the Leiden Collection notes the influence of masters from northern Italy, notably Orazio Gentileschi and Carlo Saraceni, in the use of colour and the choice of subjects.
In 1616, ter Brugghen was registered as a master painter in the Guild of Saint Luke in Utrecht; he appears regularly in the city archives from 1622 onwards. Between 1618 and 1625, the stadtholder’s court commissioned him to paint a portrait of the Roman emperor Claudius, intended for a series of the Twelve Roman Emperors executed by several artists.
He died in Utrecht on 1 November 1629, probably during the plague epidemic then raging in the city, and was buried at the Buurkerk. His wife was then expecting their eighth child, a daughter named Henrickgen, who was born in March 1630.
