Beatriz Milhazes, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960, is a Brazilian artist. After studying social communication, she trained at the Escola de Artes Visuais do Parque Lage between 1980 and 1983. Her paintings combine Brazilian cultural motifs with references to Western modernism in rhythmic, brightly coloured compositions. She uses collage and transfers paint onto canvas from painted transparent films. Reusing these supports allows traces of pigment to pass from one work to another. She has participated in the São Paulo and Venice biennials, among others. The Fondation Beyeler devoted an exhibition to her in 2011, while Horto, dated 2008, is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
