Born in New York in 1955, Roni Horn studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale. Her work encompasses sculpture, drawing, photography and books. Since 1975, regular journeys to Iceland have informed her exploration of landscape, identity and the experience of place. Drawing is a foundational activity, allowing her to compose relationships rather than establish a definitive image.
Doubling, series and displacement invite viewers to compare things that appear identical but change with time and position. Water becomes a key subject in this investigation of unstable perception. Some Thames, a permanent installation at the University of Akureyri, distributes eighty photographs of water throughout public spaces. Texts, images and materials thus explore difference within repetition, involving the viewer's movement in the experience.
This profile brings together identity references for Roni Horn and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
