Pimen Nikitich Orlov, born in 1812 in the Voronezh region, began his apprenticeship with a decorative painter. He later attended the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, where Karl Bryullov’s teaching shaped his development. Portraiture brought commissions from high society. In 1841 support from the Society for the Encouragement of Artists enabled him to travel to Italy, which became the principal setting of his career.
Orlov combined society portraits with scenes of Italian life. Refined fabrics, elegant poses and landscapes create paintings attentive to both status and the expression of their sitters. The Portrait of the Sukhovo-Kobylin Sisters and October Festival in Rome illustrate these two directions. His Self-Portrait of 1851 asserts his position as an artist established in Italy; he received the title of academician in 1857.
This profile brings together identity references for Pimen Orlov and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
