Vladimir Nemukhin (1925–2016) belonged to Soviet unofficial art and the Lianozovo circle. He studied with Pyotr Sokolov, who introduced him to the experiments of the Russian avant-garde, and turned towards abstraction in the late 1950s. He participated in apartment exhibitions that allowed Moscow artists to present their work outside official institutions, followed by the event known as the Bulldozer Exhibition in 1974.
From the mid-1960s, playing cards became a recurrent motif in his semi-abstract still lifes. They retain a connection with the object while organising geometric compositions. The Ruarts Foundation holds several examples of these investigations, including White Composition With Cards of 2000. After a period living in Germany during the 1990s, Nemukhin returned to work in Moscow in 2005.
This profile brings together identity references for Vladimir Nemukhin and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
