French painter associated with landscape, marine painting and illustration, Gustave Vidal (1895–1966) was born and died in Avignon. His work spans several regions and registers, from landscapes to marine and urban scenes. The gallery documenting his career mentions landscapes of Provence, the Basque Country, Corsica and central France, as well as naturalistic landscapes, street scenes and seascapes.
After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon, Vidal exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. The recorded subjects indicate a practice open to varied environments, from the lands of Provence to the coasts, without being limited to a single pictorial genre. According to the same gallery, he works with thick impasto, using both the palette knife and the brush. It also reports that the Impressionist and abstract works he encountered in Paris influenced his painting.
