Born in Eleusis and deceased in Athens, Thanos Tsingos began his career in architecture: he studied it at the National Technical University of Athens from 1931 to 1936, then practised before the Second World War. Mobilised in the Middle East, he was imprisoned and pardoned in 1946. He turned to stage design and painting.
A Greek painter associated with Tachism and Informel art, Tsingos worked at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. His practice involved the use of his hands and knives; at times, he also squeezed paint directly from the tube onto the canvas. The series Les Fleurs illustrates this tension between figurative recognition and abstraction.
Retrospectives were devoted to him in Athens in 1965, the year of his death, and then at the Centre Pompidou in 1980.
The provenance given for the work Trois bateaux mentions Alex Maguy and the Galerie de l’Élysée in Paris. The work was sold at auction for CHF 16,000, excluding fees.
