Austrian painter Alexander Scherban, born in Vienna in 1886 and died in Nuremberg in 1964, worked in landscape, still life and cityscape, while also addressing industrial subjects. Based in Mauer, near Vienna, he organised an art exhibition in 1916 to benefit the widows and orphans of residents who had died during the First World War. In 1920, he designed motifs for the municipality’s Notgeld and painted a view of Mauer for the town hall council chamber; he executed it on the reverse of a portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph that had previously hung in the chamber.
His commissions also included a large painting of Hoher Sonnblick and the Naturfreundehaus Kolm-Saigurn, made for the platform of the Hietzing Stadtbahn station at the request of the Municipal Insurance Institution. Elected to the committee of the Kunstgemeinschaft in 1931, he took charge there of internal affairs and representation before the political authorities. In 1936, he moved to Nuremberg for a few years.
Among the works described in sale listings is The royal city at night, an oil on canvas measuring 70 × 88.5 cm, signed “Alex Sherban” and dated July 1908. A floral still life on panel, signed and dated 1927, is given as measuring 67 × 49 cm. Another listing describes an oil on canvas depicting the Königssee, with a view of St. Bartholomä and the Watzmann, signed and dated 1936; it measures 60.5 × 75.5 cm. Italienische Landschaft, dated 1956, is described as a signed aquatempera, “Scherban Alexander”; the label on the reverse repeats its title and medium. The listing describes a Mediterranean mountain landscape, with a garden gate beside a staircase descending to the foot of a rock, beneath a cloudy summer sky.
