The Dutch painter, watercolourist and draughtsman Aris Knikker (1887–1962) developed his artistic practice between faience painting and independent painting. Born in Haarlem, he trained at the academy in The Hague and lived there for almost his entire life, until his death in the city in 1962. He began his career as a faience painter at Rozenburg before devoting himself to independent painting.
His preferred subjects are atmospheric waterscapes, farmyards and expansive views. This range thus brings together stretches of water, rural scenes and panoramas, without being limited to a single type of landscape. Simonis & Buunk places his work in the manner of the Hague School and notes an atmosphere reminiscent of the works of J. H. Weissenbruch. The same notice reports that many of his early works were forged and attributed to Weissenbruch.
This profile brings together identity references for Aris Knikker and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
