Gabriel Griffon

Born : 1866Died : 1938Documented citizenships : France

From 1900 onwards, Gabriel Griffon developed a Symbolist and decorative style of painting in which mythical scenes, nymphs, parks and allegorical figures appear side by side, in a palette of pastel and golden tones. Born in Paris in 1866 and died in Honfleur in 1938, he trained at the École des beaux-arts de Paris from 1884 to 1889, in Gérôme’s studio. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1890 and received a bronze medal there in 1905.

His travels in Italy, Greece and Egypt marked his career; he also exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and taught drawing at the Académie Julian. In the 1910s and 1920s, he devoted himself to large-scale works in both oil and watercolour, and created sets for the theatre and decorations for hotels. Settled in Normandy in the 1930s, he painted seascapes and biblical scenes.

Among the works presented by Galerie Agnès Nord is the signed watercolour on paper « 2 Women in a Landscape », measuring 39 × 48.5 cm.
