Imre Goth’s career is distinguished by the intersection of portraiture and the illustrated press: he portrayed figures from the entertainment world, including Lilian Harvey, as well as political figures such as Hermann Göring, while contributing to several German periodicals. After studying at the Academy of Budapest, he continued his training with Arthur Kampf in Berlin from around 1918. His contributions appeared notably in Jugend, Scherl’s Magazin, Der Querschnitt, UHU and Die Dame. In 1928 and 1929, portraits of Lilian Harvey by Goth appeared on the covers of Scherl’s Magazin and Jugend.
He took part in the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1925 and in exhibitions in Birmingham in 1935. A work selected in connection with the Georg-Schicht Prize was presented in a touring exhibition inaugurated at Gurlitt in Berlin on 25 November 1928, and subsequently shown in nine German cities. After his work in Berlin, Goth emigrated to England. After the Second World War, he worked mainly as an advertising graphic designer for the British film industry and produced advertising films. He lived in Farley Green, Surrey, as well as in London.
A work entitled Saalszene, an oil painting on canvas signed and dated 1921, was sold for CHF 2,000, excluding fees. A portrait by Goth entered Carl Laszlo’s collection after the Second World War; the collection was auctioned by Hampel in Munich in 2016.
