Hermann Traugott Louis Fuechsel, also known as Füchsel or Fuchsel, was a landscape painter born in Braunschweig in 1833 and died in New York in 1915. Sources describe him as German-American and associate him with both the Düsseldorf school and the Hudson River School. After his first lessons with Heinrich Brandes in Braunschweig, he studied in Düsseldorf, where he belonged to the Malkasten in 1857–1858 and met, among others, Albert Bierstadt, Worthington Whittredge and Emanuel Leutze. Settling in New York in 1858, he joined the Artists’ Fund Society and opened a studio at 839 Broadway. He began exhibiting at the Boston Athenæum and the American Art-Union in 1860, and frequently took part in exhibitions of the National Academy of Design and the Brooklyn Art Association between 1861 and 1900. In 1882, he moved his studio to the Tenth Street Studio Building, where he worked until his death.
His painted work focuses mainly on mountain and water landscapes. He favoured elevated viewpoints and completed his compositions in the studio. His American subjects include the Hudson River and its valley, the White Mountains, Lake George, the Catskills, the Adirondacks and Kaaterskill Falls, as well as the Rocky Mountains. Fuechsel also practised lithography: he collaborated with printer and publisher Louis Prang and produced reproductions of landscapes by other painters, notably Albert Bierstadt.
Works by the artist are held, among other institutions, in the collections of the Hudson River Museum, the Walker Art Center, the Wadsworth Atheneum, The New York Historical and the Staten Island Museum. Works held in collections include Keene Valley, Adirondacks, dated 1876, at the Williams College Museum of Art; Hudson River Scene, dated 1875, at the Hudson River Museum; and View of New York on the Bay from Staten Island, dated 1871, at the New-York Historical Society Museum & Library. New York and Staten Island from N.Y., dated 1860, is described as a signed and dated oil on canvas.
