Antonio Xavier Trindade was born in Goa and trained at Bombay’s Sir J. J. School of Art, where he subsequently taught for many years. A portrait painter, he also practised sculpture and engraving, combining European techniques with his Indian environment. Family scenes occupy an important place in his work, including Family by Lamplight of 1916.
Temple, a watercolour of 1931, depicts the surroundings of Sri Sundar Narayan Mandir near the Godavari River. Worshippers prepare for religious practices; light brushstrokes suggest movement, while warm tones convey the atmosphere of the place. Held by Fundação Oriente, the work belongs to a collection of paintings by the father and his daughter Ângela donated by the Esther Trindade Trust in 2004.
