Joseph Steingrübel (1804–1838), a German painter, graphic artist and lithographer born and deceased in Augsburg, first trained under his father, Johann Simpert Steingrübel, an illuminator, engraver and art publisher. From 1826, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, where he specialised in landscape painting. The Countess von Gravenreuth commissioned several landscapes from him for payment. His study trips took him to Switzerland, Tyrol and Italy; from 1834 to 1837, he continued his artistic training in Rome, Venice, Florence and Verona.
Landscape has a documented place in his work, in both oil painting and watercolour. He also produced lithographs, which Georg Kaspar Nagler counted among the notable lithographic works around 1830. At Balthasar Speth’s request, he also reproduced several works by other artists held in Speth’s gallery.
In Augsburg, Steingrübel regularly exhibited through the Kunstverein and sold his works there. The Munich Kunstverein also acquired some of his oil and watercolour landscapes for distribution in prize draws. Works were acquired for the collections of Alfred von Lotzbeck and Joseph Maillinger; others are recorded in museums, including the Thorvaldsen Museum.
This profile brings together identity references for Joseph Steingrübel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
