Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863–1944) made personal experience a driving force of his artistic investigation. He trained in Christiania, receiving advice from Christian Krohg, visited Paris in 1885 and later associated with the Christiania bohemian circle. Begun in 1885, The Sick Child reflects his effort to convey a painful experience through painting. At Åsgårdstrand he painted Inger on the Beach in 1889; the curving coastline of this area recurs in several compositions. Printmaking also formed an important part of his work, represented by examples in the Art Institute of Chicago. The Scream remains one of his best-known images, within a practice that repeatedly seeks visual expression for lived experience.
This profile brings together identity references for Edvard Munch and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
