The French painter André Wilder was born in Paris in 1871 and died in Antibes in 1965. Born Eugène Lucien André van Wilder to parents of Belgian origin, he became a French citizen in 1890. He studied at the École des arts décoratifs under Jean-Léon Gérôme, then continued his training in the Midi with Marius Michel. Adopting the artist’s name André Wilder, he worked as an illustrator for Parisian periodicals between 1893 and 1898, including Le Journal pour tous and Le Monde illustré. He also illustrated two books by André Maurel: Les Trois Dumas, published in 1896, and an Essai sur Chateaubriand, published in 1898. His meeting with Maxime Maufra marked the beginning of his artistic career. In 1898, a tourist poster devoted to Brittany for the Chemins de fer de l’Ouest was attributed to him; a copy is held at the musée départemental breton in Quimper.
Wilder first exhibited in Paris at Bernheim-Jeune in March 1900. The following year, he presented two paintings at the Salon de la Libre Esthétique in Brussels, one of them a Breton work, and took part in the salon again in 1910 and 1913. Three of his paintings were selected for the first Salon d’automne, held at the Petit Palais in 1903. Bernheim-Jeune subsequently devoted two solo exhibitions to him, in 1904 and 1909, bringing together 42 and 46 paintings respectively. The catalogue for the first includes a five-page preface by Octave Mirbeau. Several works were acquired by the State: La Vallée du Lude à Carolles in 1911 and L’Oise à Janville in 1913, the latter exhibited at the musée du Luxembourg, as well as Le Solidor à Saint-Servan in 1914 and Saint Pol’s, Londres in 1915. He was appointed a Knight of the Légion d’honneur by decree of 11 January 1933. In 2025, the musée du Faouët presents a group exhibition devoted mainly to his Breton output, with a few works made in the Midi.
