Oscar Wergeland

Born : 1844Died : 1910Documented citizenships : Norway

Oskar Arnold Wergeland, usually known as Oscar Wergeland, was a Norwegian painter who lived from 1844 to 1910. Trained with Johan Fredrik Eckersberg and subsequently in Copenhagen and Munich, he devoted particular attention to history painting. From 1889 he also taught at the national school of arts and crafts.

His Eidsvold 1814, completed in 1885, reconstructs Norway’s constituent assembly more than seventy years after the event. Installed in Parliament, the painting draws on preparatory portraits and compositional studies. The Nasjonalmuseet also holds The Norwegians Land in Iceland in 872, painted in 1877. Another canvas, The Sick Child, dated 1906 in the catalogue, records his interest in more intimate subjects. Together these works show the range of his repertoire, extending from collective history to individual experience.

This profile brings together identity references for Oscar Wergeland and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
