Rodolfo Morgari (1827–1909), born and deceased in Turin, belonged to a family of painters associated with the Savoy court. He first trained with his father, Giuseppe Maria, before attending the Accademia Albertina during the 1840s. From 1848 he exhibited with Turin’s Promotrice of Fine Arts, continuing his participation until the closing years of the century.
His practice combined religious painting, portraiture, historical compositions and restoration. In 1858, Victor Emmanuel II appointed him painter and restorer of the royal palaces. Church commissions formed another substantial part of his work: in 1884 he contributed to the decoration of San Pietro in Cherasco. His career thus linked Turin’s artistic institutions, service to the monarchy and extensive religious decorative programmes throughout Piedmont.
This profile brings together identity references for Rodolfo Morgari and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
