Glen Rubsamen is an American artist from Los Angeles whose practice combines painting, photography and writing. His landscapes contrast skies of shifting colour with dark silhouettes: trees, antennae, buildings or billboards. These stationary elements become protagonists in images that evoke California as well as cinematic stills.
The familiar landscape thus conceals a careful construction of contrasts and signs. Pigeon Key and the Seven Mile Bridge, presented jointly by Mai 36 and Annemarie Verna in Zurich in 2006, takes an island and a Florida viaduct as its starting point. The Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden also devoted an exhibition to him that year. Some Kind of Sweet Homecoming, an acrylic on wood from 2013, carries an inscription on the reverse identifying Los Angeles as its place of execution.
