For Mino Maccari (1898–1989), images and writing belonged to a shared critical observation of human behaviour. Born in Siena, the Italian artist combined painting and printmaking with editorial work. His name is closely associated with Il Selvaggio, a magazine linked to the Strapaese movement and published between 1924 and 1943. The satirical register he developed there continued after the war through drawings for Il Mondo. Social conventions and bourgeois attitudes supplied material for an often biting form of figuration. The Expressionist character of his paintings and graphic work gave this critical approach a distinctive visual form. A solo exhibition at the Venice Biennale in 1960 marked a stage in a career that continued until his death in Rome in 1989.
