Mathys Schoevaerdts’s work brings together landscapes, seascapes and genre scenes in compositions in which figures occupy an important place and stand out for their individuality and attentive observation. His landscapes generally depict imaginary views. Among his most realistic views are capriccios and depictions of Italian cities, notably Rome and Venice, although he never visited Italy. The earliest documented information about his career dates back to 1682, the year he began his apprenticeship with the landscape painter Adriaen Frans Boudewyns. He was admitted as a master to the Brussels Guild of Saint Luke in 1690, then served as its dean from 1692 to 1696.
He also spent time in the United Provinces. His brother Frans was likewise a painter in Brussels in the early 18th century; the two brothers jointly produced idealised classical landscapes. Alongside his paintings, Schoevaerdts produced a small number of prints devoted to genre scenes, including The Game with the Apple. The biographical notice dates his last known work to 1702. A sale catalogue describes Hafenlandschaft mit Händlern und Fischern as an oil on canvas measuring 28.3 × 40.8 cm and attributes its provenance to a Belgian private collection.
