The Italian painter Luigi Brignoli, born in Palosco in 1881 and died in Bergamo in 1952, trained at the Accademia Carrara under Cesare Tallone and Ponziano Loverini, then attended classes at Brera in Milan. As early as 1903, his Self-Portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in London; two years later, he was invited to Zurich to paint a series of portraits of the Châffer family. In 1906, he exhibited at the Società Amatori e Cultori in Rome and took part in the Venice Biennale for the first time; in 1911, he exhibited in Buenos Aires and Brussels, among other places.

In 1918, he created Belgium 1914, a work awarded a gold medal by the Ministry of Education. The Belgian consul in Milan acquired it for the Royal Museum in Brussels. After his first trip to North Africa in 1922, a large exhibition of works painted in Africa was held the following year at the Circolo Artistico in Bergamo. In 1924, he undertook a long journey to Spain. He held solo exhibitions at the Galleria Pesaro in Milan in 1925 and at the Galleria Permanente in Bergamo in 1932. In 1934, he organised the exhibition Tripolitania at the Circolo Artistico Bergamasco, devoted in particular to recent works made in Tripoli and its surroundings.

In 1928, Brignoli was appointed professor at the Accademia Carrara’s School of Painting. He received the prizes of San Remo, Livorno and Bergamo in 1939; in 1942, a presentation at the Permanente in Milan brought together works spanning forty years of work. The institutions cited as holding his works include the Accademia Carrara in Bergamo, the Royal Museum in Brussels, and the modern art galleries of Algiers and Biskra.
