The French painter Ferdinand Gueldry brings two worlds into dialogue in his work: boating scenes on the Marne, with their rowers and spectators, and factory interiors and working-class life. In 1876, while still in training, he co-founded the Société nautique de la Marne with fellow students in Joinville-le-Pont, on Île Fanac.
From 1881 onwards, rowing became a major subject in his painting. A regatta at Joinville-le-Pont, dated to that year, forms part of this group of water-sports scenes, in which athletes in striped jerseys and spectators create the spectacle along the riverbanks. In 1885, Gueldry broadened his subject matter to include industrial spaces and workers’ labour. Le Décapage des métaux, dated 1886 and recorded at the Musée de Picardie in Amiens, and Le Laminoir, dated 1901, testify to this attention to the factory. Works devoted to water also include Match annuel entre la Société Nautique de la Marne et le Rowling club (1882) and Aux sources du canotage — Sur la Tamise (1896), both listed as held at the Musée de Nogent-sur-Marne, as well as Sur la Marne. Scène de canotage à Bry-sur-Marne (1906).
Before 1908, the French state acquired eleven of his canvases. Gueldry was appointed a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1908. In 2018, the Musée de Nogent-sur-Marne devoted the exhibition Ferdinand Gueldry, peintre de l’eau et de la lumière to him.
This profile brings together identity references for Ferdinand Gueldry and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
