Ferruccio Manganelli

Born : 1883Died : 1968Documented citizenships : Italy

The Italian painter Ferruccio Manganelli, born in 1883 and died in 1968, trained at the Royal Professional School of Colle di Val d’Elsa while also attending evening drawing classes for workers. He distinguished himself in ornamental and geometric drawing before working on the production of decorative stucco. This activity frequently took him to Lombardy — to San Pellegrino, Milan and Monza — as well as to Liguria. These journeys belong to the early stages of a career in which decorative work went hand in hand with painting. For portraits, he favoured pencil, an approach that the biographical source associates with the influence of Antonio Salvetti; for landscapes, especially rural ones, he used oil and pastel. After his marriage, dated to 1914, he turned increasingly towards colour and Divisionist painting.

He took part in the First World War as a combatant, was wounded in the operational zone and then hospitalised in Alba, in the province of Cuneo. On returning to Colle Val d’Elsa, he continued painting outdoors and took part in his municipality’s cultural activities with Mino Maccari. After the Second World War, a series of works focused on colour and light in depictions of the Tuscan countryside. Manganelli died in Colle di Val d’Elsa on 20 November 1968. In 1997, the municipality of Colle Val d’Elsa dedicated an exhibition to him, presented in the crypt of the Misericordia.
