Adrian Ghenie belongs to the generation of artists that emerged in Cluj around the turn of the century. His painting brings images of collective memory into contact with questions of power and oppression, combining historical facts with fiction. His work also includes installations: The Dada Room, dated 2010, brings different materials together on the scale of an entire room.
The history of painting informs these investigations. At Palazzo Cini in Venice, he presented nine paintings in 2019 that connected the city’s history with tensions in the contemporary world. For Shadow Paintings, shown at the Albertina in 2024, he reimagined lost works by Egon Schiele from old black and white photographs. Distortion of the body becomes a means of exploring the sitter’s psychological presence.
This profile brings together identity references for Adrian Ghenie and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
